The pace bowler has claimed 309 Test scalps in 71 Test matches with an impressive average.
Australia's chief selector the selector has confirmed that skipper Cummins will have a crucial role in this winter's England-Australia contest.
Rumors had circulated that the 32-year-old might be unavailable due to a stress fracture in his back that was still troubling him.
Earlier indications from team management suggested no definitive call had been made regarding his involvement, with the five-Test series set to start on the 21st of November in Western Australia.
The selector shared that Cummins is "building up" and felt positive about the prospects of being involved.
"We know that time is getting short and there are permutations at play, not just the physical problem, but further aspects," Bailey remarked.
"It's positive. There's strong faith that he's going to play a key capacity. Hopefully from the opening match. Should that not happen, then we'll pick it up."
Injury History
Cummins was ruled out the ODI and T20 games against India and New Zealand recently after medical tests showed a lower back issue.
There is a track record of recurring issues, with recurrences in multiple past seasons leading to absences from three Australian summers in a short span.
Cummins stated he would be bold in recovery efforts in his rehabilitation process to ensure his availability for the series.
He mentioned that it was unclear if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his recovery but acknowledged it was "pressing" for him to regain fitness for the initial match.
Contingency Plans
If he's unavailable, veteran batsman Smith will lead the side.
The talented all-rounder was recently pulled out from the national team for their ODI contests against the Asian giants as a precautionary measure because of discomfort in his torso.
He labeled it as a "slight concern and stated that Green will play in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "well-prepared to be ready to bowl."
"Considerable effort has gone into creating the schedule for him to be available for the first Test as an batting and bowling option," he elaborated.
"Originally, he'd only feature in the initial matches anyway. How he handles the bat in limited-overs, should it hinder progress for a short period, the choice was made to approach this more conservatively."
