European Union Could Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Official Says

The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unjustified” travel bans issued by the United States against five European individuals involved in combating digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official has said.

EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions targeted figures who have been at the heart of campaigns to enact laws regulating US-based technology firms.

“For too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce US companies to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in condemning the move.

The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

The DSA is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities contend the regulations are essential to combat hate speech and falsehoods.

This disagreement threatens to become a facet of a much broader ongoing political and ideological clash involving the current US administration and Europe.

Additional Updates in the News

In related judicial news:

  • A US district judge has blocked attempts to cut security grants to states which resist specific federal immigration rules. The judge ruled the case was “a further instance” of tying government assistance to adherence to directives.
  • Authorization was issued for the dispatch of 350 national guard members to a major US city ahead of the holiday period, alongside an ongoing immigration enforcement operation.
  • A Pacific Island nation will consent to take in a limited number of individuals from the US in exchange for increased assistance, after signing a formal agreement with US authorities.

Additionally, a congressional representative has initiated legal action to demand the removal of the current president’s name from a well-known performing arts center in Washington DC.

Analysts have also noted that recent statements regarding foreign petroleum resources align with a wider ideology in certain circles of “resource imperialism”, leading to parallels with past foreign policy strategies.
